Kansas City—Classes were canceled early at Arrowhead Middle School on Monday morning following a fire in the building. The evacuation of students and staff occurred around 10 a.m. when a fire broke out in the boiler room near the cafeteria.
According to the Kansas City Kansas Public Schools director of communications and marketing, the fire ignited when a table caught fire. Fortunately, school staff contained the flames to the boiler room, and all students and staff were able to evacuate safely without any reported injuries.
Upon evacuation, students were relocated to the nearby Kansas City Kansas Public Library’s West Wyandotte location. Parents were notified and given the option to pick up their children from the library. As a result, about one-third of the students opted to remain at the library for the remainder of the school day.
Looking ahead, Arrowhead Middle School will conduct classes at HomeField KC on Tuesday, providing a temporary learning environment for students. The timeline for when students will be able to return to their original building is currently unknown.
This incident marks the second fire incident affecting Arrowhead Middle School in recent months. In November 2024, the school had to be closed for a week following a similar fire caused by a mechanical failure in the HVAC system, which resulted in damage to one of the classrooms.
The Kansas City Kansas Public Schools district remains focused on ensuring the safety of its students and staff during this challenging time. The response to the fire demonstrates effective emergency protocols in place at the school, prioritizing safety and quick evacuation.
As the situation develops, officials are committed to communicating updates to parents, students, and staff in hopes of minimizing disruptions to the educational process.
