Indianapolis – A police-involved shooting occurred Saturday evening on the near northeast side of Indianapolis, specifically in the 2400 block of 38th Street. Fortunately, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) reported that no officers or the alleged suspect sustained injuries during the incident. The suspect was apprehended a short distance away at the intersection of 39th and Tacoma avenues.
Following the incident, a substantial police presence was established at both the 38th Street and Tacoma Avenue locations. According to authorities, there are no indications of other individuals being involved, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
Officers were originally dispatched to a McDonald’s restaurant located at 2425 East 38th Street in response to a disturbance involving a weapon. A 911 caller alerted authorities that a man was armed and had threatened employees at the fast-food establishment. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 34-year-old male suspect inside the restaurant, where it was reported that he had allegedly threatened to kill an employee.
During attempts to engage with the suspect, a struggle broke out that led to a gun being discharged within the restaurant premises. Although the officer discharged their weapon during this confrontation, neither the suspect nor any officers were struck by gunfire. However, it was noted that at least one nearby vehicle was hit by bullets during this chaotic situation.
After fleeing the scene, the suspect was later captured and arrested in the 3900 block of North Tacoma Avenue. Importantly, no civilians were reported injured as a result of the shooting.
As part of standard protocol following such incidents, the officer involved in discharging their firearm has been placed on administrative leave. IMPD Assistant Chief Catherine Cummings stated that the situation inside the busy restaurant was perilous, but due to the rapid response and quick thinking of the officers, everyone remained safe.
To assist in the ongoing investigation, individuals with any information regarding the incident are encouraged to reach out to Sgt. Erika Jones at the IMPD Homicide Office. Those wishing to provide information anonymously may also contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
This event highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement and the risks involved in responding to potential violent situations, as well as the necessity of swift action to ensure the safety of the community.
