News Summary

Turrentine Middle School’s football game against Hawfields Middle School has been canceled due to non-compliance with participation documentation requirements. The team failed to submit necessary health and safety forms by the deadline, leading to an automatic forfeit. Principal Scott Moore expressed disappointment over the situation, highlighting the impact on the community and emphasizing the importance of timely documentation submissions. This cancellation has also affected upcoming practices, while discussions continue around ensuring compliance for student-athletes in the future.

Burlington, NC – Turrentine Middle School’s football game against Hawfields Middle School, scheduled for Wednesday, September 17, has been canceled due to the team’s failure to submit required participation documentation. The lack of compliance resulted in an automatic forfeit, meaning the game is now counted as a win for the Hawfields Huskies.

The cancellation has been met with disappointment from Turrentine Middle School’s principal, Scott Moore, who expressed the sentiment in an email sent to parents. The principal acknowledged the heartache this situation has caused within the community, highlighting the importance of participation in school sports.

The documentation required for student-athletes includes several critical health and safety forms that are mandated by the state Department of Public Instruction and the Alamance-Burlington School System (ABSS). These forms consist of physical examination records, medical history, eligibility requirements, participation consent, concussion information, and an acknowledgment of the ABSS athletic policy manual.

Parents were informed that all necessary documentation had to be submitted through the DragonFly online platform by August 8 before any students could try out for sports. However, despite reminders, some student-athletes failed to meet the compliance deadline of September 12 as set by ABSS officials.

A reminder on Turrentine’s athletics department webpage explicitly stated that all forms must be completed before the first day of tryouts. Nevertheless, the consequences of non-compliance led to a situation in which athletes were unable to practice until their paperwork was properly processed, according to Emily-Lynn Adkins, chief communications officer for ABSS.

In addition to the game cancellation, Turrentine also had to cancel football and dance/cheer practices on Tuesday and Wednesday following the notification of the forfeit. As the season continues, Turrentine Middle School currently has six remaining football games scheduled, while Hawfields Middle School has five before the upcoming county bowl games that are set to start on November 3.

Currently, Turrentine Middle is reported to be the only school within the ABSS system that is not compliant with the athletic regulations. School officials expect to resolve the compliance issues within the next week, and parents are encouraged to log into their child’s DragonFly account to verify that all required documentation is up to date.

This incident has sparked conversations among parents and the school community regarding the importance of timely submissions of required sports documentation to ensure that student-athletes can fully participate in their desired sports activities. As the situation unfolds, Turrentine Middle School is likely to implement measures to avoid similar issues in the future and to maintain the integrity and enthusiasm surrounding school sports.
