Novi – A major water main break on Thursday, September 25, 2025, has disrupted daily life in Novi as well as surrounding communities, causing widespread school closures and issuing a boil water advisory due to potential health risks.

The break occurred around 7:20 a.m. on 14 Mile Road, just west of M-5. It involved a 42-inch transmission main operated by the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA), resulting in a significant loss of water pressure in the surrounding areas. GLWA crews have been actively working to isolate valves and restore the water supply, but repair efforts are expected to take several hours.

The water main break has left many residents, including those in nearby neighborhoods, without water supply and facing limited access to their homes. Affected areas include parts of Novi, Walled Lake, Wixom, and Commerce Township, where a boil water advisory has been issued due to the possibility of bacterial contamination stemming from the pressure loss.

As a precaution, residents are advised to refrain from watering lawns and to limit non-essential water use. For consumption, boiling water for at least one minute is highly recommended prior to drinking or using in food preparation; alternatively, residents are encouraged to use bottled water.

Novi city officials have announced the temporary closure of several public facilities, including City Hall and the Novi Public Library, as these locations are unable to operate effectively without a water supply. Classes in the Novi Community School District were also canceled, as the school district determined that it could not function without running water. Additionally, St. Catherine of Siena Academy in Wixom closed for the same reason.

The situation has prompted many residents to voice their concerns about the duration of the outage and the water quality available. To assist those affected, non-drinkable water is being provided at the Department of Public Works until 9 p.m. on September 25, offering aid for toilet flushing needs. Drinkable water is also being supplied from a well at the ITC Community Sports Park until the same time, with the requirement that residents bring their own containers.

As of 2:15 p.m. on the same day, workers had successfully closed four out of seven necessary valves and continued their efforts to isolate the break and restore service. However, officials have stated that even after water service is back up and running, the boil water advisory will remain in effect until testing confirms that the water is safe for consumption.

Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to stay informed by following updates through the city’s official websites and social media channels, which will provide crucial information about the ongoing situation and when regular water service will resume.

This incident underscores the vulnerability of the water infrastructure, reminding residents of the critical nature of these systems and the impact that failures can have on day-to-day operations and safety in the community.

As repairs continue, officials are working diligently to restore normal water service as soon as possible.
