El Centro Police Department’s New Headquarters Nears Completion

The city of El Centro is set to open its new Police Department headquarters in December 2023, nearly finished at 90% completion. Although the opening date has been delayed from the initially planned October timeline, significant progress has been made on this important facility. With a budget of $49.6 million, the project is funded through Measure P, a voter-approved half-cent sales tax aimed at enhancing public safety.

This new headquarters is regarded as one of the city’s most substantial investments in public safety in recent years, reflecting the community’s commitment to improved law enforcement infrastructure. The projected completion date for the overall project has shifted from March 2026 to April 2026, with ongoing adjustments to ensure the facility meets operational needs.

Current Construction Status

As workers focus on interior finishes, site improvements, and the implementation of advanced communication systems, the project’s execution involves intricate coordination between city staff and contractors. The acting Police Chief has indicated that minor operational challenges have arisen during construction; nonetheless, law enforcement services in the city have remained uninterrupted throughout this period.

To date, the El Centro City Council has approved a total of 15 change orders, which has amounted to additional costs of $2.57 million. An extra $2.5 million has also been allocated for various enhancements aimed at ensuring the headquarters is fully equipped for modern law enforcement needs.

Facility Features

The new headquarters will be equipped with features designed to improve operational efficiency and community services. Key facilities will include a dedicated property retrieval area, new interview rooms designed for victims, and a Real Time Crime Center which will enhance responsive policing. A standout initiative of the new facility is the “Drones as First Responders” program, which aims to incorporate aerial technology in emergency responses.

For community engagement, the building will offer a 2,146-square-foot multipurpose community room. This space can accommodate up to 150 people and will serve as a venue for various community meetings and events.

Infrastructure Changes

In addition to the new headquarters, planned changes to local roadways are set to provide better access and safety for residents. Main Street will be repaved, while 11th Street will be narrowed to facilitate one-way northbound traffic. Furthermore, the primary entrance to the new police headquarters will be relocated to the south side of the building, accessible off Main Street, ensuring convenient access for the public.

Community Support

Community engagement and support have played a crucial role in the advancement of the police headquarters project. Acknowledgment is given to the residents, as the project is fundamentally based on the funding from Measure P, which underscores the residents’ commitment to enhancing public safety in El Centro. This project not only serves current needs but is also designed to cater to the community for the next 75 years, exemplifying much planning and effort over decades.
