The vehicle involved in the incident was a Dodge Durango, driven by 38-year-old Osvaldo Vela from Yonkers, New York. Authorities reported that Tucker was pronounced dead at the scene by Greenwich Emergency Medical Services around 3 a.m. Vela sustained minor injuries from the crash and was subsequently taken to Stamford Hospital for treatment.
In response to the accident, the state police, along with the Greenwich Fire Department and Connecticut’s Department of Transportation, arrived at the scene to conduct an investigation. I-95 north was temporarily closed in that area during their assessment, reopening just before 10 a.m. As of Saturday afternoon, no charges had been filed, and the incident remains under investigation by state police.
Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto extended his condolences to Tucker’s family and stressed the inherent dangers faced by individuals working on highways. Eucalitto also reiterated the significance of the “Slow Down, Move Over” law, urging drivers to remain vigilant and refrain from distractions while driving in construction zones.
Tucker was affiliated with the local 146 laborers’ union, which expressed great grief over his untimely death. The union has also offered its condolences to Tucker’s family, friends, and colleagues.
