The sheriff’s office is emphasizing the importance of diligence when hiring contractors to avoid similar fraudulent situations.

Bullard, Texas – A 51-year-old man from Bullard has been charged with misapplication of fiduciary property greater than $300,000 after allegations emerged that he embezzled over $500,000 from a couple for personal use. Brian Christopher Glass, who operates a construction business named Glass Limitless Homes and Designs, was taken into custody on Tuesday and is currently detained at the Smith County Jail.

The investigation into Glass began after a husband and wife sought assistance from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office in January 2025. The couple had contracted Glass to rebuild their home following a devastating fire caused by a lightning strike. Between April and July 2024, they paid over $500,000 to Glass for the construction work. However, they became concerned when subcontractors began quitting due to non-payment from Glass.

As problems with the project escalated, Glass began asking the couple for additional funds beyond what was stipulated in their signed contract. After realizing their contractor was mismanaging funds, the couple started directly compensating subcontractors and purchasing materials themselves. They finally decided to report their situation to the sheriff’s office in November 2024.

Upon learning of the allegations, an investigator from the sheriff’s office attempted to contact Glass. During a phone call, Glass was requested to visit the sheriff’s office to explain his spending of the funds, which he declined. The couple then submitted detailed records of all checks written to Glass and his business, totaling $518,206. This amount was closely examined during the subsequent investigation.

Further bank records were reviewed and revealed that approximately $115,989 was indeed allocated to pay subcontractors and acquire building materials. However, the investigation uncovered that roughly $400,000 of the funds had been diverted by Glass for personal expenses, including frequent trips to casinos.

The sheriff’s office has taken this incident as an opportunity to inform the public about the importance of diligence when hiring contractors. They recommend that homeowners check business references and ensure that the contractor’s company is registered with the Better Business Bureau. Additionally, they advise clients to request detailed quotes and paid receipts for materials throughout the construction process to prevent such fraudulent activities.

Emphasizing caution, the sheriff’s office noted that individuals who appear trustworthy may still attempt to defraud homeowners. This situation underscores the necessity of accountability and verification in contracting relationships, particularly in high-stakes projects like home construction.

This recent case has raised awareness in the Bullard community about the potential risks associated with hiring contractors and the importance of protecting oneself against fraud. As the investigation continues, more individuals may reflect on the advice given by the authorities to safeguard against similar situations.
