Brainerd, Minnesota – Cragun’s Resort, a prominent establishment on Gull Lake, has been sold to Leisure Hotels and Resorts, marking the largest resort transaction in Minnesota’s history. The sale, finalized on April 1, 2024, ends an 85-year ownership by the Cragun family, which began when Dutch Cragun’s parents established the resort during the Great Depression.

The resort boasts an array of amenities including 206 lodge-style rooms, 55 cabins, five dining options, and three golf courses, in addition to 50,000 square feet of meeting and event space. Its expansive property spans over 800 acres and features a mile of pristine shoreline, continuously evolving with improvements that included a notable $25 million remodel in 2015.

Jamie Tatge, president of Leisure Hotels and Resorts and a seasoned professional with over 25 years of expertise in hospitality, sales, and resort management, will oversee the newly acquired property. Having been part of the company since 2007, Tatge is well-prepared to lead a new chapter for Cragun’s Resort.

Future Development Plans

Tatge has announced plans to modernize the resort, focusing on the redevelopment of the cabins located on the southside of Steamboat Bay, with an anticipated completion by fall 2025. The modern enhancements aim to elevate the guest experience, including expanding food and beverage options and enriching the overall ambiance of the resort.

Retaining the existing staff during this transition is a priority for Tatge, who emphasizes the importance of collaboration with the current team to ensure that the high standard of service remains intact. Eric Peterson, the general manager who has served in that position for 14 years at Cragun’s, will continue his role under the new ownership, contributing to a seamless transition.

Historical Significance and Legacy

Cragun’s Resort is known for its historical importance and lasting appeal, especially among families and conference groups. The Cragun family’s commitment to hospitality has created a welcoming environment that has attracted guests for generations. The new ownership by Leisure Hotels and Resorts expresses a strong local commitment to upholding Cragun’s legacy while integrating modern amenities and experiences to cater to future visitors.

The acquisition signifies a pivotal moment for Cragun’s Resort, as it transitions to a new era that prioritizes contemporary enhancements while honoring its rich history. As Leisure Hotels and Resorts prepares for the upcoming summer season in 2025, the focus will be on ensuring that all improvements align with the values and traditions that have defined Cragun’s for over eight decades.
