Hopkinton Building Collapse Disrupts Traffic on Main Street
Hopkinton, Massachusetts experienced a significant disruption on Wednesday afternoon when a building collapsed during demolition, sending debris into a busy roadway. The incident took place around 2:43 p.m. at the former Hopkinton Drug building located at 52 Main Street, where construction was ongoing.
The collapse involved the south-facing wall of the structure, which unexpectedly fell towards the sidewalk and the street. According to reports, debris from the building spilled onto the sidewalk and the edge of Main Street, creating a hazardous situation for pedestrians and drivers. Photographic evidence from the scene depicted a partially collapsed structure, debris scattered across the roadway, and structural damage affecting surrounding municipal property.
In response to the incident, Hopkinton police promptly issued a warning to local drivers, advising them to avoid the affected area and seek alternative routes. Traffic was notably affected, particularly as the collapse coincided with the dismissal times of local high and middle schools, resulting in increased foot traffic in the vicinity. Emergency personnel including police and fire crews were dispatched to control traffic flow, allowing only one lane to remain open for vehicles until the scene was secured.
Emergency crews utilized specialized video and audio equipment to search for potential victims who may have been trapped under the rubble. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the incident. The collapse knocked over street signage and affected the walk signal at the intersection with Cedar Street.
Town officials have stated that the construction company responsible for the demolition will be held accountable for the damage to municipal property as a result of the collapse. The demolition permit for the redevelopment project was granted on July 17, and demolition work had commenced earlier that morning.
Crews began the demolition process on the northern side of the building, adjacent to a parking lot, before the incident. In preparation for the demolition, safety measures including the erection of a fence and water socks were implemented around the property in early August.
The debris on Main Street delayed traffic until around 4:30 p.m., when one open lane was restored after crews moved the wall debris back onto the construction site. The remaining lane was cleared, allowing traffic to resume more normally, but caution is still advised in the area.
Boston-based Parsons Commercial Group and Brendon Properties are overseeing the redevelopment project, which is set to transform the site into a multifamily mixed-use development. The estimated timeline for the overall construction is approximately 16 to 18 months, subject to changes based on the incident and any resulting investigations.
This incident is ongoing, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
