News Summary

China has officially begun construction on a massive dam along the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet, expected to be the largest hydropower project globally. With a projected capacity to generate up to 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, the initiative will primarily serve energy needs across China while raising international concerns about its impact on downstream nations, particularly India. Critics warn of potential ecological damage to the fragile Tibetan plateau. The project aims to bolster local industries and job creation while aligning with China’s carbon neutrality goals.

Lhasa, Tibet – China has officially begun construction on a massive dam along the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet, which is expected to become the world’s largest hydropower project. The initiative aims to bolster China’s renewable energy production, with a projected capacity to generate up to 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.

The Yarlung Zangbo River, recognized as the Brahmaputra River in India and the Jamuna River in Bangladesh, is vital for water supply across multiple nations, affecting approximately 1.3 billion people in the region. The project’s commencement was marked by a ceremony attended by Premier Li Qiang, as reported by state news agencies. Following years of planning, the project received governmental approval in December, signifying a pivotal step in China’s energy strategy.

The comprehensive project involves not only the construction of the main dam but also the establishment of five hydropower stations. Although its primary electricity output is intended for consumption in other areas of China, it will also support local energy needs within Tibet. The anticipated cost of the entire initiative is around 1.2 trillion yuan (approximately $167.1 billion).
