News Summary

Indianapolis faces ongoing violence as two separate shootings result in one death and one injury. The first incident on East Tabor Street involved a woman driven to help after being shot, leading to the discovery of a male victim killed at the scene. The area has a history of frequent police calls for assaults and drug activity. The second shooting was linked to a road rage altercation, resulting in a murder charge against a woman who fired into another vehicle. Police continue investigations, urging public cooperation, as community concerns grow about local safety.

Indianapolis is currently grappling with the aftermath of two separate fatal shootings that have prompted an investigation by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD). The incidents, which left one man dead and another woman injured, have raised concerns among local residents regarding ongoing violence in the area.

The first shooting occurred on the near south side of Indianapolis on the morning of October 21 at approximately 5:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of East Tabor Street, close to East Raymond and Shelby streets. Following the shooting, a woman who had sustained injuries drove away in search of help, making her way to a location near Raymond and Shelby streets. She was found to have been shot, and her vehicle exhibited signs of gunfire. First responders transported her to a local hospital, where she was reported in stable condition, awake and breathing.

After arriving at the scene, officers were directed by the woman to an alleyway north of Tabor Street, where they discovered a man suffering from gunshot wounds. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the male victim is yet to be disclosed as authorities are awaiting family notification from the Marion County Coroner’s Office.

Residents in the vicinity expressed their disturbance over the shooting, although many were not surprised due to persistent issues linked to the property where the incident occurred. Reports reveal that police had been summoned to this specific location over 40 times in the past four years to address various incidents, including assaults, stabbings, and drug-related activities. Community leaders, such as Debbie Conway, president of the Bean Creek Neighborhood Association, confirmed that efforts are being made to tackle problems at the site, including the dismantling of an aged garage and trailer.

The IMPD has called on anyone possessing information or video evidence pertinent to the incident to come forward and contact the police or Crime Stoppers.

The second shooting, also leading to a loss of life, was tied to an alleged road rage incident, resulting in a murder charge against 23-year-old Deborah Benefiel. This altercation began when the victim, Kentrell Settles, honked his horn at Benefiel’s vehicle, which escalated into her allegedly shooting into Settles’ car, fatally striking him while he was stopped at a red light on 38th Street and Georgetown.

Benefiel was apprehended by police within hours following the shooting, utilizing license plate readers to track down her vehicle. Although she declined to speak with police after the incident, she was recognized as the shooter by the victim’s girlfriend. Prior to this tragic event, Benefiel had no prior criminal history and is currently being held without bond while awaiting her trial.

In light of these shootings, the IMPD along with local prosecutors have emphasized the importance of patience and composure on the roads, urging the public to prevent violent confrontations stemming from road rage incidents.

As the investigations into both cases continue, the Indianapolis community remains on edge, mourning the loss of life and grappling with the complexities of violence that has affected their neighborhood.
