News Summary

Motorists in the Lake Tahoe region will face lane closures next week due to multiple construction projects, including a major pavement rehabilitation. The work on State Route 28 is scheduled to disrupt traffic mainly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. focusing on improving road conditions. In addition to the lane closures, the Fanny Bridge will remain closed until mid-November, impacting travel. Residents and visitors are urged to stay updated and plan accordingly to ensure safety and access during these essential construction activities.

Lake Tahoe – The California Department of Transportation (CalTrans) has announced various lane closures set to affect motorists in the Lake Tahoe region next week due to multiple ongoing construction projects. The closures will specifically impact State Route 28 (SR 28), starting Sunday, August 24 and continuing through Thursday, August 28.

The primary focus of construction will be a $31.7 million pavement rehabilitation project along SR 28 in Tahoe City. Managed by Mercer Fraser Company of Eureka, the project will involve nightly construction work from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., creating a disruption primarily for westbound traffic.

During construction, traffic will be redirected with a bi-directional setup, although access to cross streets and nearby driveways will remain open. Importantly, any street parking within the designated construction zone will be prohibited to ensure safe passage and efficient work. Additionally, construction will carry over into Friday, August 29 when work will take place from 7 a.m. until noon.

Utility work is also scheduled in conjunction with the SR 28 project. This work will occur from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, August 25 and Tuesday, August 26, between Star Harbor Court and Lake Forest Road (west). Further, broadband utility work will be taking place from August 25 to August 28, between the State Route 267 junction in Kings Beach and the Nevada state line, with work hours extending from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Another significant project affecting the area is the closure of the Fanny Bridge in Tahoe City, which is closed to all traffic until Saturday, November 15. Motorists will be diverted to Lake Boulevard to access both State Route 89 (SR 89) and State Route 28 during the bridge closure. Importantly, West Lake Boulevard will remain open for business and access to transit centers, while the pedestrian and bicycle path across the Truckee River Dam will continue to be accessible throughout the project.

Residents and visitors alike should note that pile driving activities are scheduled for Saturday, August 23 and Sunday, August 24, which may create noise and vibrations in the area. Additionally, some utility work is to take place overnight from 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 24 until 7 a.m. on Monday, August 25, between Park Lane and Harbor Avenue in Brockway.

Further utility work on SR 89 in Placer County is planned from August 25 through August 28, daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and will affect the segment between South Street and Fern Street in the Homewood area. With the potential for weather conditions, equipment availability issues, or unexpected events, CalTrans has specified that project schedules are subject to change.

Motorists are encouraged to plan their travels accordingly and remain cautious through the construction and utility zones to ensure both their safety and that of the workers involved in these crucial projects. Continued updates and information about the construction progress will be available through CalTrans as the work advances in the Lake Tahoe region.
