His efforts in the U.S. and Nigeria highlight the importance of health equity and practical training in public health.

Pocatello, Idaho – Nnamdi Moeteke has made significant strides as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Community and Public Health and Interim Director of Undergraduate Public Health Programmes at Idaho State University. His impressive career trajectory spans various sectors, including clinical practice, community medicine, and public health education, stemming from his roots as a medical doctor in Nigeria.

Moeteke’s journey began in Nigeria, where he graduated from the University of Nigeria. Initially aspiring to be a lawyer at the young age of eight, his interest shifted to medicine as he discovered a stronger aptitude for science, particularly Biology. It was during his medical studies that he recognized his calling to make a broader impact beyond individual patient care.

After completing his medical education, Moeteke served as a medical officer in Isin LGA, Kwara State, during his National Youth Service Corps scheme. There, he implemented health and development projects that earned him a state award, marking the start of his commitment to healthcare improvement. His experiences during this time led him to transition from clinical practice to public health, influencing his decision to train medical students in community medicine while at Delta State University Teaching Hospital.

In 2023, Moeteke joined Idaho State University, where he is prominently involved in the Idaho Collaborative for Infectious Disease Prevention, a project funded by the CDC. His role includes developing an interdisciplinary curriculum aimed at enhancing the state’s capacity to respond to infectious diseases. He has created ten online educational modules for students and public health practitioners, further driving the importance of public health education.

In addition to his academic responsibilities, Moeteke also teaches and advises students in the Master of Public Health (MPH) program at Idaho State University. His passion for community health extends to Nigeria, where he co-founded Medix Frontiers, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free health services focusing on HIV prevention and public health education to rural communities. Medix Frontiers has grown to build a volunteer network of over 800 individuals, successfully providing healthcare services to tens of thousands across Enugu State.

Moeteke’s extensive involvement in public health initiatives has positioned him at the forefront of responding to significant health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria. He faced numerous challenges during these emergencies, including resource scarcity, misinformation, and the emotional strain on healthcare workers. Despite these obstacles, he remained committed to improving Nigeria’s health system but sought greater opportunities for influence and professional growth abroad.

His pursuit of advanced education led him to receive the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship, allowing him to study Public Health at the University of Liverpool. Encouraged by a classmate’s recommendation shared through WhatsApp, he seized the opportunity to expand his knowledge. Moeteke has also served as a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Medical School, where he focused on primary healthcare and universal health coverage.

After relocating to the United States, he faced challenges in adapting to Idaho’s winter climate and navigating different communication styles compared to Nigeria. Nonetheless, he has been recognized for his contributions to public health through various awards, including the Commonwealth Scholarship and the National Institute of Professional Engineers and Scientists Award.

Moeteke believes that health equity is a fundamental human right and emphasizes that everyone should have the opportunity to achieve optimal health. He notes key differences in public health education between Nigeria and the United States, highlighting disparities in funding, data-driven approaches, and the integration of practical experiences in training.

His guiding philosophy integrates his Christian faith with his professional pursuits, illustrating a commitment to serving others and contributing to both community and personal development. As Moeteke continues to influence public health education in the U.S., he remains an impactful figure dedicated to improving healthcare outcomes both locally and globally.
