President Trump Diagnosed with Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Medical examination related to chronic venous insufficiency

News Summary

President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition causing blood pooling in the legs. The White House confirmed the diagnosis, stating that the President’s overall health remains good despite this common ailment typically seen in older adults. Trump is advised to wear compression stockings and keep his legs elevated. This diagnosis follows his recent physical, where he was deemed fit. Medical professionals emphasize the importance of management to improve quality of life for those experiencing similar symptoms.

Washington D.C. – President Donald Trump, 79, has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) following reports of swelling in his legs. The White House confirmed the diagnosis on Thursday during a regular news briefing conducted by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, indicating that the President’s condition is mostly benign and commonly occurs among older adults.

Concerned about the swelling, Trump consulted the White House Medical Unit, leading to a series of examinations. The results from a bilateral lower extremity venous Doppler ultrasound confirmed the diagnosis of CVI but showed no signs of complications such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), arterial disease, heart failure, or other serious systemic illnesses. The examination was described as being conducted “out of an abundance of caution.”

Chronic venous insufficiency is characterized by the inability of leg veins to efficiently return blood to the heart, resulting in blood pooling in the lower limbs. Symptoms may include swelling, pain, itching, and in more severe cases, changes to the skin, ulcers, bleeding, or DVT. Approximately 10-35% of individuals over age 70 may experience this condition, which could worsen due to factors such as obesity, past blood clots, or occupations involving prolonged standing or sitting.

Doctors have recommended that Trump wear medical-grade compression stockings and keep his legs elevated at night to alleviate symptoms associated with CVI. Although the condition may lead to discomfort and reduced mobility, it is rarely life-threatening. In Trump’s case, he is reported to be in “excellent health”, with normal cardiac structure and function despite the recent diagnosis.

During the recent examination, medical staff also noted bruising on the back of Trump’s hand, which is attributed to frequent handshaking and his use of aspirin as part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen.

Chronic venous insufficiency is a common medical issue, with around 150,000 individuals in the United States diagnosed each year. Treatment options for CVI generally include medications, wearing compression garments, and lifestyle changes such as regular exercise and weight management. Individuals are encouraged to incorporate these treatments to help manage symptoms effectively.

This diagnosis comes after Trump’s first annual physical of his second presidential term in April, when he was deemed “fully fit.” The White House continues to maintain that the President is in overall good health, making this latest health update a routine follow-up in light of aging and common chronic conditions.

As awareness about chronic venous insufficiency continues to grow, more individuals—especially seniors—are encouraged to seek medical advice if they experience symptoms associated with the condition. Proper management can significantly improve one’s quality of life as people navigate the challenges that come with aging.
